The class is an advanced practicum in building platforms and projects using many open source technologies, including drupal and django, as well as closed development platforms like flash and actionscript.

Nicknamed the “Startup Semester,” each student is responsible for building and launching their own site as their individual major project. This aspect of the course teaches core IT, design and development skills as well as content and community management and entrepreneurial skills needed to start new projects and products.

The class also operates as a design and development studio producing major group projects. Students learn to deal with clients and work together in a setting similar to a real world consulting agency. The first of these projects is building and launching a new conversation and community platform site for The American Forum series held multiple times each year by SOC and broadcast over NPR and C-SPAN.

Each student and the professor maintain individual tumblr microblogs and post to this group blog to share experiences and information with each other and the the public. We invite you to follow us and share your comments.

Building Interactive Websites

Andrea's Website

www.worldphotoexchange.com

Claritza's website

My website

My Website

My Website

and Overheard in the District is up

http://www.overheardinthedistrict.com/

my site

you probably don’t need to check my site out unless you want to feel really good about yours

My site

onlyaday.net

On the less frustrating side, I also added and tested a “watch” feature so users can make sure people don’t fuck with their loved ones bios. This would also help with community building because stakeholders get to see the positive changes that are made i.e. memories and tributes that others leave.

Wordpress to Drupal

I don’t remember if anyone else is switching their site from wordpress to drupal, but here’s the handy directions in case you’re like me and freaking out about where to even start:

Facebook unveils big changes

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — Facebook unveiled a host of changes at its f8 developers conference that are already ruffling some users’ feathers.

Many of the changes take advantage of big revisions that Facebook made to its privacy settings in late March. Those changes opened the door to allow select third-party Web sites the ability to access and store some users’ personal information.

Those sites can use that information to show what a user’s Facebook friends have been doing on their sites. CNN, IMDB.com and ESPN.com are among the first sites signing up to use the technology. So if you’re a Facebook user reading CNN.com, you’ll be able to see what all your Facebook friends are looking at, view recommended stories and see which friends liked which stories.

The system is called XAuth and serves to facilitate cross-site authentication (logging in) for sharing and potentially many other uses. Facebook and Twitter, the dominant ways people share links with friends outside of email, are not participating.”
